Welcome to Nelson SPCA
The Nelson Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was established in 1887 and is a member society based in Bishopdale, Nelson.
Our primary functions are to:
- Investigate and deal with complaints of cruelty and neglect
- Uphold the laws relating to the treatment of animals and take prosecutions where necessary
- Provide sanctuary to animals in distress
- Re-home suitable animals where possible
- Assist with public education
- Promote responsible pet ownership.
The Nelson Society has three full time and two part time staff, assisted by aproximately 50 volunteers . Our complex features a shelter and a shop which supplies a large selection of new and used animal products including: pet carriers, pet food for dogs, cats, birds, etc, food bowls. The shop also hires out equipment such as cat traps, and pet carrying cages. There is also an SPCA branch in Blenheim, Motueka and Golden Bay.
Each year, Nelson SPCA provides sanctuary to around 2000 animals in distress:
