Adoption Information
Adopting a pet can be a wonderful and rewarding experience. However its also a big commitment and one that shouldn't be taken too lightly. A new pet is a decision that requires a lot of thought. We're not trying to put you off BUT:
Some things to consider before adopting:
-
Do you have the space for it? A large dog in a small apartment is not a good mix. If you don't have the garden or floor space, then maybe consider another type of animal more suited to your circumstances.
-
Do you have the time to provide exercise and regular care? Is there someone who is going to be home to spend time with your new pet on a regular basis? (Remember the novelty will wear off quickly and kids will promise to do everything on the first day and will have forgotten by the next day!) A pet is not a toy with batteries that will go flat quickly. An average pet will outrun the energiser bunny!
-
Have you worked out the costs of feeding, registering and caring for your pet? Do you need cages, accessories and other necessities before your pet arrives? Have you considered the cost of desexing, vaccinations, ongoing care and/or registration?
-
If you rent or lease your house, are you permitted to keep a pet and what would be the consequences if someone complains?
-
Have you considered where you will source your pet from? If you are going for a particular pedigree then breeders are the most likely source. However if you don't mind about the breed, contact Nelson SPCA. Any pets adopted by Nelson SPCA will have been given a thorough examination so you can be sure you are buying a healthy animal.
