NELSON SPCA OPEN DAY 2011 A GREAT SUCCESS!
On November 12th 2011 the Nelson SPCA celebrated their 5th Annual Open Day along with about 500 visitors who came to support the event. Despite the inclement weather the Nelson Community was not deterred and within an hour the sun was shining & a great day was had by all!
This year there were many activities for people to participate in, especially for the younger generation. Some of the more popular activities included the fantastic pony rides provided by Michelle, her team of volunteers and beautiful horses & the petting zoo with some interesting animals including the blue tongued lizard & ‘Squeaky’ the baby pukeko. Children also enjoyed the treasure hunt that kept them guessing their way throughout the centre and the craft corner where they could colour to their hearts content, decorate their own biscuit or make a pine cone bird feeder.
Open Day follows the SPCA Annual Appeal which is the largest fundraiser of the year & is an opportunity for people to come up to the Centre to find out a little bit more about the role of the SPCA within the community. It’s also an important fundraiser for the SPCA and this year over $1600 was raised during Open Day alone. To date our Annual Appeal has raised over $7000 with donations still trickling in which is a great result.
A big buzz was added to Open Day when 3 of our Centre cats found forever homes including two kittens and one of our longer standing residents, Fatty Pus Pus. There was also a lot of interest in our dogs throughout the day and as a result two of our puppies ended up finding a home to call their own.
The Nelson SPCA would like to thank everyone who came out for the day to show their support as it’s you who make the event such a success! We would also like to thank the following people and businesses for their help & input on the day, we couldn’t do it without you!
