We often have stray animals brought into
the SPCA Centre, mainly cats.

The SPCA works under the Animal Welfare
Act 1999, which states in section 141 that the
SPCA must take all reasonable steps to find
the owner of the animal.

If an owner hasn’t been found by the time the
animal has been in our custody for 7 days we
then have the right to either;

  • Sell the animal
  • Find a new home for the animal
  • Humanely euthanise the animal (this would
    only ever be done if for some reason the
    animal was not able to be re-homed)

We don’t hold stray dogs.
These are dealt with by your local council.

If you have lost an animal - be it cat, dog or whatever
we run a TRACE-A-PET system so please phone us
 on 03 547 7171 and we will put it on our database.
